Do I Need a Domain Name? …and a Hosting Account?

When trying to build a business and promote it online you should really consider to buy a domain name. It’s very important that you get your own domain.

Despite it is not necessary to earn money online because there are ways to do it without it (affiliate programs whare you send traffic directly to your affiliate link, i.e.), if you wish to build a long term business, you must have got your own domain.

Few years ago it was a bit expensive to buy a domain but today you can purchase one at a very affordable price.

There are many places where you can buy one (or more). NameCheap, GoDaddy… are some of them among many others.

At the momment of buying your domain you must have a clear idea of the niche you want to be in. Regardless of where you buy it, you need to pick a name and this should be one which contains the primary keyword you are targeting with the site you want to build.

There are generic Top Level Domains (TLD) as .com, .net, .info, .biz, .org, but if you can you must go for the .com, .org, or .net first. They are the most respected ones and search engines love them. This doesn’t mean they dislike the rest but those ones are the most appreciated.

With your own domain, your first step is taken and you can start working with it because you can redirect it to any site of your choice while you promote your domain name. For example, let’s say you want to promote a clickbank product. The hop link they’ll give you is terrible ugly so you’ll use the redirection possibility they give you when buying the domain. You’ll login to your domain registrar member’s account and copy that link there. Then, all the traffic you sent to yourdomain.com will be redirected to your clickbank affiliate link. This way you are promoting with a link (your domain) which looks nice instead of doing it with the other ugly link.

But, if we want to build a solid business and have our own pages we’ll want to have a hosting account where to upload them. Also, hosting accounts are very affordable nowadays.

Choose a basic one to begin. It won’t cost you much and later, if your needs increase you’ll be able to upgrade to another.

HostGator and HostMonster work extremely well for cheap. There are 100′s so you can search for “cheap web hosting” and find the one you like best.

From here, you’ll be able to start building your web pages which means your  online business.

So, definitely, if you want to make a living online building your long-term business, you’ll need a domain name and a hosting account.
